Assessment of Rakta Mokshana (Bloodletting) by Siravedha in hypertension management
Sydney Lungu
Hypertension, also termed high blood pressure, is a prevalent lifestyle disorder that affects a significant portion of the global population. In Ayurveda, this condition is understood through a different lens, involving imbalances in Vata, Pitta, and vitiated Rakta. One of the most ancient and effective therapies mentioned in the classical texts is Rakta Mokshana therapeutic bloodletting, particularly through the method of Siravedha (venesection). This paper explores the theoretical basis, classical references, methodology, and modern scientific correlations of Rakta Mokshana in the context of hypertension. It aims to bridge the gap between traditional Ayurvedic wisdom and contemporary biomedical insights, demonstrating that Siravedha has potential in managing hypertension by reducing vascular load, removing vitiated Rakta, and restoring doshic equilibrium.
