Comparative study of Nasya Karma and modern Nasal sprays in allergic rhinitis
Hemlata Verma
Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is an immunological disorder commonly characterized by nasal symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and itching. These symptoms significantly impair the quality of life of affected individuals. Modern nasal sprays, including corticosteroids, antihistamines, and decongestants, are the standard treatment options. However, Ayurvedic medicine offers a holistic approach to managing AR, particularly through the practice of Nasya Karma. This study compares the effectiveness of Nasya Karma, an Ayurvedic nasal therapy, with modern nasal sprays in treating AR, based on clinical evidence, Ayurvedic references, and contemporary pharmacological studies. The paper also integrates relevant references from classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam to explore the traditional wisdom behind Nasya Karma.
