Abstract:

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), also known as Shushkakshipaka in Ayurveda, is an increasingly prevalent ocular condition characterized by tear film instability, ocular discomfort, and visual disturbance. In Ayurvedic texts, the therapeutic modality of Netratarpan (oleation therapy for eyes) is indicated for various eye disorders. This study evaluates the efficacy of Netratarpan using Jeevantyadi Ghrita a medicated ghee formulation mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts in the management of DES. Thirty patients with clinically diagnosed DES were selected and treated with Jeevantyadi Ghrita Netratarpan over a period of 7 consecutive days. Pre- and post-treatment assessments included the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, Schirmer’s test, and Tear Film Break-Up Time (TFBUT). Results indicated a significant reduction in symptoms and improvement in tear film stability, validating the efficacy of the intervention. This paper supports the integration of Ayurvedic therapies in the holistic management of ocular disorders.
